Another Week Another Vinyl: Weezer: Raditude
I absolutely love Weezer. Sure their brand of geek rock may be shallow, but not many bands can put out song after song which has a hook as strong as the last. This is what Weezer has done their entire career - until recently that is. My local record store carried the vinyl copy of their newest album Raditude a few days before release, which prompted a purchase from myself. Originally I was on the fence on whether or not to pick up the vinyl version, but ultimately, the early release date pushed me over the edge. Damn you Record Store! The package felt a little light, but for $19 I figured there would have to be something in there. Who makes vinyl package now and days with nothing more than just a vinyl inside? Well apparently Weezer does. What a waste of money this was. I rip off the wrapper to find just a fine piece of black wax, nothing else. No gatefold artwork, no lyrics, no free download. Nothing. Not to mention, reading that Little Wayne was featured on the album made me a little weary - rightfully so too.
In an age where pushing a physical product is becoming increasingly difficult due to illegal downloading, Weezer displays why the music industry is collapsing under its own weight. You can say that it’s all about the music, and it’s impossible to refute that point, but if the record industry wants to continue urging us to spend our hard earned money for overpriced music, then they better get their act together. Give me lyrics, a free download when I buy a vinyl, some kind of artwork - SOMETHING!
If you’re interested, Raditude has its moments, but misses on the Weezer spirit. At some point after they recorded their hit single "Beverly Hills", Weezer became some party hard group that practically abandoned that insecure geek. I wish I could burn the wax and melt it for fuel for my car. $19 would have lasted me the week in gas...

Never heard Weezer in my life. Love the cover though.
The first album and Pinkerton are excellent. Some solid stuff came after (Green Album) but I had heard mixed reviews about this one from a few reliable sources. Based on your review, it seems as if Rivers might be losing the plot.
That's crazy, because vinyl is a collector's format. Today,I'd say over half of the vinyl releases come on color and/or 180 gram. The free download or CD thrown in is becoming more and more common as well. $19 might be an average price for new vinyl (though you can get plenty of really great stuff for 2/3 that price or less), vinyl fans have come to expect a nice package and it's always a disappointment if it's nothing special.
Mark - If your interested in some simple nerdy pop rock Weezer's Blue album and Pinkerton are incredible.
Sean - I was very disapointed in Weezer's last album. Rivers seemed to forget what made them a great band that the average person could relate to.
Bob - It is pressed on 180 but that is the only thing it has going on. I purchased this along with Wolfmother's latest record which is two 180 gram records in a nice gatefold jacket and a free download for the same price.
How is the new Wolfmother? I haven't heard it yet. I have to look into getting Omar's new one. I'm hoping for a nice package with that.
Bob - It's a good album but doesn't quite resonate with me as much as their debut did. I think with the added guitarist to the band the songs became less focused. It is still a good album though.
I think Ben Folds had the right idea with Songs for Silverman-- it was released as a 2 sided CD/DVD. On one side was the CD audio, playable in any CD player, on the other was the album in DVD-A, plus some video clips (interviews, a music video, and etc.), and an alternate version of Landed.
If record companies started releasing CD/DVD audio versions I think CD sales would pick back up a bit.
With Dream Theater's last album, Systematic Chaos they ALMOST had the right idea by releasing a standard version and a deluxe version. The deluxe version had both the CD & DVD audio. With their most recent album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings they released a single CD version and a 3CD deluxe edition. CD2 features covers of songs by other bands performed by Dream Theater, and CD3 features an instrumental version of the album.

I've tried real hard to get into Weezer but just never could. Good review and cograts on another vinyl, your collection must be getting really big!
