Favorite Genesis Album?
This past week I've been on a Genesis kick. I've been shuffling around albums like Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Selling England by the Pound and Nursey Cryme with reckless abandon. All of which are obviously stellar. Prior to this week I've always felt fairly certain that Foxtrot was my favorite Genesis album, however, after listening to Selling England by the Pound over and over again these past few days, I'm starting to question my opinion. Selling England by the Pound seems to be growing on me more each day, which has me wondering, why didn't I view it this way before? Has it become my clear favorite? Not quite yet, but right now it's tied with Foxtrot, and its stock is rising. Anyhow, I'm going to keep this short and sweet. I'm curious to see what's your favorite Genesis album.

Selling England By the Pound just edges out The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway for me, though I agree on the relative excellence of just about everything from the Gabriel era.
You know what proggers I really like from that period? Gentle Giant. Great band.
What about Invisible Touch?
Okay, I'm kidding. I'd say I like Selling England By the Pound, but I really have to be in the mood for Genesis. There's something kinda lite about them that always seems to nag at me. I'm not saying they're a bad band, because they certainly pushed a lot of limits with Gabriel, but there's just something...I dunno.
I have your problem as well. My first Genesis album was 'Trick of the Tail' and I then started on the back catelogue with 'Foxtrot' which I still reckon is my favourite. However after buying 'Selling England' my faith began to waver and for a time it surplanted 'Foxtrot' but I'm glad to say that the latter has again prevailed...this week anyway:)
Selling England By the Pound is easily my favorite largely because of Firth of Fifth, both Peter Gabriel's flute solo and Steve Hackett's guitar solo give me chills.
The rest of the album is also quite enjoyable. I even like the understated More Fool Me.
I may be in the minority but I'm not that big a fan of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway as I find it to be a bit overindulgent and over the top. Nursery Cryme through Selling England By the Pound are all more enjoyable to me. I even like Wind & Wuthering and A Trick of the Tail more than Lamb.
For some reason-Duke. The rest aforementioned are good, no doubt, but my heart lies in Duke.
Sean - Gentle Giant is definitely an awesome band. Sort of hard to get used to with the whole medeival folk thing going on, but definitely rewarding stuff. I love the album Free Hand.
Bob - How could I forgot Invisible Touch! For that matter, how could I forget Abcab too! Absolute classics, lol.
Musicobsessive - As of right now it's probably a week by week basis for me too. Right now it's Selling England by the Pound.
Perplexio - "Firth or Fifth" is by far my favorite Genesis song. Absolutely stunning. Steve's solo is fantastic, and the whole song just takes on this epic feel.
I can also see where you're coming from with Lamb. It's definitely pompous and as you said, self indulgent. Lamb is hit or miss for me depending on how I feel.
Drew - I've never really given Duke much of a listen. I sort of blocked everything out after Hackett left. Maybe I'll give it another listen.
Genesis Live is my choice. I've listened to this album for over 30 years just for the live version of Watcher Of The Skies.
There are a few songs that give me chills. With all of the other songs that give me chills it's because of the vocals. I get chills from Firth of Fifth from Hackett's guitar solo!
Another of his songs that really gets to me is That Vast Life from his Metamorpheus classical guitar album.
When I want subtle, haunting Genesis, either Selling England By The Pound or Foxtrot. For rocking Genesis, Live.
I have a double live bootleg called Musica, from Duke Tour....man its incredible...and I have a boot of Thre Lamb...both really cool.
I'm late here, like "paper late."
I just think "wind and wuthering" is in the top three with "s/t" from 1983 and "Selling England by the Pound." "moonlit knight" is one of my favorite songs. I love almost everything save the last two.
