Guilty Pleasures?

Ever listen to music which you love, but something deep inside of you tells you that maybe you shouldn't? Those great guilty pleasures that are buried in the depths of your iPod, or are hidden eight folders deep into you Desktop? Sort of like Taylor Swift... Oops, did I say that?

Well there are those obvious guilty pleasure such as the one previously mentioned, but then there are those others that have you debating whether or not they are indeed a guilty pleasure.

The other day while driving home from work I felt compelled to throw on some Tragic Kingdom from No Doubt. An album that was on a constant rotation back while I was in fifth grade. Back then I never had second thoughts of it being a guilty pleasure, but then again, I was also rocking out to Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill too. So with No Doubt cranked at full volume, I found myself singing

Cause I'm just a girl, little 'ol me
Don't let me out of your sight
I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights
Wait a minute! I can't be singing that! Or should I? I still regard No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom as one of the finer moments of the 90s regardless of what people want to say about Gwen Stefani (I'm not sure how you could criticize one of the most beautiful women ever!)

Now I just wanted other peoples opinion on whether or not listneing to these artists is considered a "guilty pleasure."

-No Doubt specifically Tragic Kingdom
-Alanis Morissette specifically Jagged Little Pill
- Jewel (She is a great lyricist...)
-Goo Goo Dolls (They have a few songs I really like)
-The Monkees (Personally I'm not a fan, but they do have a few catchy songs, I'm interested in your opinion though)

Music is so subjective. "Tragic Kingdom" is actually a really good CD, though. As for the others, it would be tough for me to even rate them as a guilty pleasure. Everything has it's place , however.

My guilty pleasure? Devo.

No Doubt is great.
Jewel is great.

Idk about the others, but Idk if I'd call them a guilty pleasure.

I listen to Third Eye Blind, and I'm ashamed. Not completely, but. Oh, too much; I've said too much. Bob or Chuck will have my head on a lancet.

Sean - Tragic Kingdom is fantastic, I just wish they could have stuck to that formula instead of making the drastic change in sound that they did.

Chelsea - Jewel's Pieces of You is phenomenal. I can listen to it all day.

Hatter - It's very ironic that you mentioned them. I was going through my iPod to find bands to list, and I was starring at Third Eye Blind and was debating whether or not to post them. I actually saw them a few months ago, and I wasn't a big fan before that but I went because I had free tickets and my friends really liked them. I ended up loving the show and began to really appreciate their music.

10cc. Just embedded "Art For Art's Sake" in a blog post, my favorite song of theirs.

Check my post about guilty pleasures from awhile ago.

Peace.

I agree with Sean...it's all subjective. Whatever is groovy for you is all that matters.

One of my guilty pleasures is early Bee Gees, before they did all the disco crap.

Daniel - Thanks for the link, I'll check out your post.

Rockandrollguru - My old roomate from college continuously tried to convince me that early Bee Gees material is great. I've personally never listened to it, but maybe one day I should.

There's nothing guilty about listening to Tragic Kingdom. It's a fantastic album from start to finish.

I don't know if I feel guilty about listening to Goo Goo Dolls, but I do wonder what I ever saw in them. Aside from Dizzy Up The Girl, that is. That album is their best.

My own guilty pleasure is Avril Lavigne's first album. It's pop, but it's good pop.

Russ - I think my hesitation with No Doubt lies in the fact of their drastic change and Gwen Stefani's pop experiment. And while I don't want to admit it, her solo stuff is amazingly catchy.

Here are three articles I wrote for my blog on Guilty Pleasures. The third article even provides a definition and lays out the criteria that makes an artist a guilty pleasure. Read all three and then answer Imagine Echoes' question. Here are the articles.

You like what you like and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, only what you enjoy.

I'm a metal guy thru and thru but give me some Bee Gees or some '80s New Wave like Duran Duran and I'm good. Call them guilty pleasures I guess.

What disturbs me is that No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom was in your rotation in 5th grade! I was out of college in '95 (the 5 yr plan!), I guess I'm getting old!

Steve - Instead of saying your old, lets just say I'm really young, lol.
