Another Week Another Vinyl: Jethro Tull: Aqualung

This week I spent very little time in the record store, and with good reason. Instead of feeling a little empty when looking through the collection, I had immediately found a classic. I flipped through a few albums that started with the letter "J", and then came across the classic album from Jethro Tull, Aqualung. Not only is this one of the greatest albums musically, it’s also one of the greatest album covers. The haunting painting of a deranged/homeless man is so unforgettable. Unfortunately, when I brought the album home, I was welcomed with an excruciating amount of popping and hissing. The album is practically unlistenable, but on the bright side, it is a good excuse to hang it in my office. It is yet another unplayable album hanging on the wall.

I listened to this on my IPod from front to back on an airplane trip a few days ago. I love this album. A big part of the reason is that it takes me back to my freshman year of college. A year of awakening for me and this is a fine musical reminder of that year.

I bought a new vinyl 200 gram version of this classic and it is worth every penny.

Check it out.

Yeah, the hissing and popping would piss me off too. This is specifically not a record where that would even be somewhat tolerable.

Jwonderboy - Wow 200 gram. The heaviest I own is 180 which seems to be the norm amongst most new releases.

Hatter - Yeah, I am very picky when it comes to little/major issues in sound quality. Hissing and popping just doesn't work for me, especially considering the severity in this case. In some cases it's tolerable and I can get through it without major gripes, but most of the time it drives me crazy...

Visiting your blog lately is like re-living my musical past. For sure a classic. I saw Ian Anderson on a show recently and he was, as always, amazing on his flute.

One of my all time favourite albums - just brilliant. But it also reminds me of the 'vinyl age' when the palaver of taking endless copies back to the store because of pressing faults left you on the edge of insanity. Happy days!

This cover scared me as a young child ... but the music opened up my mind.

Funny thing is the title track is my least favorite thing on the album.

Layla - I've always wanted to see Anderson live, but never have. A few years ago he came around but tickets were $80 and nobody I knew was willing to pay. Seems to be the case most of the time...

Musicobsessive - I grew up in the CD age so I never had the same problems. I couldn't imagine how frustrating it must be to bring back album after album when you want to listen to it so bad.

David - I think that is a testament to how good this album is. Because in my oppinion the title track is amazing, but the rest of the album is just as good.
