New Metallica Single Available
Metallica has just released their newest single "The Day that Never Comes". You can it out on the bands MySpace. It sounds good, better than that Load of crap (pun intended) that has been the past twelve years. It sounds like they might be trying to reach back to their classic 80s sound. We can only hope that their new album Death Magnetic due for release on September 12th will be like the golden era...

I hope you are right!
I hope you are wrong! They've been my personal pin-cushion all these years for having BETRAYED ME. Yes, I am an original fan, long before the music videos, the commercials, even before the Great Fall. While I still love everything unequivocally up until 1988, my heart is tickled with ice and I hope they stay the soulless suckass bastards they have become, only so I can say so.
Oh, and come on! Like this song? Listen to Unforgiven and tell me they didn't rip their own song! What a tired act this bunch has become! I'm so glad I get to hate them again! Or still! Tell me these guys don't sound like a cover band of themselves.
Mad Hatter - If anything, I think I hear more "Fade to Black" than "The Unforgiven", especially in the intro. I'm too young to have been betrayed by Metallica. One of the first CD's I ever bought was the Black Album, which I think was a great album despite the departure from their best work. Since I wasn't old enough to realize the departure from their old music, I ended up despising Metallica for their handling of Napster. Even though they are a bit soulless, I still want them to make a good album, because I know they have the potential. And hell, I can live with them being the biggest cover band of themseleves - as long as they are covering the good stuff...
I only heard a brief segment, and it sounded much more Black Album than Fade to Black. But I haven't heard the whole song yet ... so I'll shut up now.
Jeff,
Honestly, all smatter aside, I don't think they have it in them. They made a very conscious effort to go back to square one -- or what they thought was square one -- and it seems to me square one is that morbid little pool of dreck they perpetuated on the Black Album. That song sounds like the Unforgiven meets Kirk Hammett tirelessly mining pentatonics -- except he sounds like he can't figure out how to do it right anymore. Sigh.
David - Did you hear the beginning or end, because the end, sounds more like the older days when they actually used to solo.
Mad Hatter - Even though it's not their best, I love the Black Album. I think Metallica really reinvented themselves effectively with that album (Unfortunately they failed to live up to the Black Album thereafter.) The songs were able to do which too much metal fails to do, and that is to have a melody. I also love Kirk's guitar work in general, this one is sort of ehh, but I don't mind that his solos revolve around the pentatonic scale most of the time, I hope he can deliver a solo equal to that of the Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning days.
