Michelle Obama's Quote Distorted
All over Conservative programming today I have witnessed people ripping apart Michelle Obama for her recent quote: "Let me tell you something. For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback." Unfortunately political spin has hit us again. Conservative shows are deleting the word "really" from the quote. The difference between really proud and proud is quite substantial. Someone who says "really proud" has been proud in the past and someone who simply says "proud" has never been proud in the past. While I think it is a petty remark to jump on in the first place, this is politics. When taking her whole speech into context it was pretty obvious she was critiquing the political process and not America itself.
Now the misquoting on print is definitely bad, but it has been taken a step further. The actual video of the quote has been edited to chop out the word "really." Below is a video of the quote, and you can clearly see that there is a little hiccup in the video right before she says proud. This video is via Bretbart.tv, and just as a little aside, Andrew Bretbart is a well known conservative. There is obviously something going on here, see for yourself...

I agree with you 100%. If someone wants to criticize her for what she said, fine. That's a discussion worth having.
But at least show the fundamental decency and self-respect to deal with reality and not distortion.
Honestly I think the press is making far more of this than the American public is.
With or without the word "really" it was a bit of a gaffe. I agree with you about the misrepresentation however.
Right now, I think Obama has more to worry about from Hillary than from McCain. McCain isn't nearly as vicious or vindictive as Hillary Clinton has the potential to be.

This quote is just a small part of how she sees the world. But with or without "really" the meaning is the same.
You can substitute really with truly or actually and have the same meaning. Leaving the word out hardly makes the quote less accurate.
The dictionary is a wonderful thing.
Peace...
As Americans, we should all be REALLY proud of our country not just proud, but REALLY proud. So, leaving the "really" part out of the quote makes no difference in regards to the intent of her statement. She is just like her husband in that she seemingly hates America as she and Barack both never have much positive to say about this great country.
Walt - Your dictionary statement means nothing. Words have taken on different meanings in society than the ones the dictionary states. If you can't tell the difference between the statement when "really" is insterted then I think you need to work on your comprehension skills a bit more. How about instead of substituting really for the words you mentioned but very in there. Becuase really and very have taken on the same meaning in our society. Open up your eyes and quit listening to your right wing media.
Bill - I'm assuming you think he is a terrorist as well. Anyone with a middle name like his must be. Where do you get your information from? Have you actually ever read anything from him, or watched any of his speeches? Because it appears to me that he has passion for his country and wants to correct the problems with it. I doubt anyone thinks our country is perfect, is there something wrong with wanting to improve the flaws in our system?
