My Week in Music: 5/7/07 - 5/13/07

For this week I started to read a book I received awhile back called "John." It was written by Cynthia Lennon and basically goes over their life together and her perspective on things which is a nice twist on his story. I'm assuming their are a few exaggerations and lies within the book considering she feels that she has been completely written off when considering John's life and it also must be painful being the mother of Julain Lennon who was the "forgotten child." Either way, I'm half way through the book and have been really enjoying it. Because I've been reading this book it has been a Beatles kind of week, so here is my week in music:

Most Listened to Album: The Beatles: "Capitol Albums Volume 1"

Most Listened to Song: The Beatles: "All My Loving"

John Lennon was long the only celebrity I'd ever wished to meet, but his treatment of Cynthia and Julian are just unforgivable. The Beatles are the most important band in rock history and yet that doesn't come close to excusing his behavior. I've always found it to be in direct contrast to his peace and love message as well as his self-proclaimed feminism. How can you stand for peace when you don't take care of your child? For me, being with my kids is the first and most important work that I do for peace everyday. I know John tried to make things better with Julian late in his life, but it may have been too little, too late. I remember Cynthia selling some stuff she had from John a number of years ago and I was glad, because even if she wasn't getting her due, at least she was getting something and wasn't holding on to him (which he didn't deserve from her).

I spend so much more time with later Bealtes (Rubber Soul and on) that I sometimes forget how good the earlier albums were. "I Feel Fine" is still one of my favorite rock songs of all time!

Bob - I'm really glad you left that comment because I often think about whether or not it was right for Cynthia to sell the letters that he wrote to her and Julian. After seeing your comment I think I've changed my mind on the situation. At first I thought it was wrong of her to sell the stuff he wrote to Julian and her but why should she keep things like that when he put them both through hell. John is definitely one of my most favorite artists in history if not my most favorite. It seems really hard to advocate for peace when you don't have peace within yourself and I think that was John's biggest problem. Like you, I often forget about their early albums, today I put on "With the Beatles" and realized once again how classic it is. They really never released anything short of being phenomenal which is why they are so important. I think you can take any album from Rubber Soul on and label it as the greatest album of all time, I certainly wouldn't fight against it.

Jeff - It's always been my opinion that Cynthia was a bit jaded, so I'm not sure how much truth I could read into with her writing. Don't get me wrong I can't stand Yoko.

Peace,

- Neo
