RIP My Baby

Yesterday marked an extremely sad day in my life. After four years my MP3 Player has died on me, it will no longer take a charge and I am now forced to move over to an IPod. I guess advancing in technology is not a bad thing but it certainly is sad considering my MP3 player is probably my most prized and important possession. I have over 7,000 songs on it and if I were to lose my player it would be so difficult for me to recover the songs considering many of them aren't backed up on discs and if they are odds are I won't be able to find them because I do not take care of my CD collection at all. There are CD's tucked in the side of my bed, under my dresser, laying around without jackets, under my car seat, in my glove compartment of my car... Well I guess you get the idea, my MP3 player has basically been my sanctuary for music. I just purchased a 30GB IPod from Apple yesterday and I should expect it to come in the mail by Wed, the only negative thing about this is that it has less space than my current MP3 player which holds 40GB. I know nobody really cares but I am going to give a brief description of my MP3 player
My RCA Lyra:

1. It was around the size of a cassette player

2. Songs took longer to load than movies playing on a computer that runs Windows NT

3. It was so beat up it became an LCA player because a part of the R in RCA came off

4. If I was to use any kind of armor to deflect a shot it would most definitely be my MP3 player, it was a metal tank which weighed around 5 lbs.

5. It froze on a daily basis, I would always carry a paperclip around so I could reset it, I once tried to tape a paperclip onto it but that didn't last too long.

So right now I am trying to conserve what is left of the battery so I can transfer all the songs over successfully, when that day comes my RCA Lyra will finally be put to rest officially.

Let me give you a big hug of condolence - I would feel that way if my iPod died. I hope you are able to transfer your songs over....don't you have them on your computer?

I think you will like the iPod - did you get the one with video? You won't beleive how clear the pic is. I love mine :)

Layla - Thanks! I don't keep my songs on my computer because I don't have enough hard drive space which is a shame. I definitely know I will like the IPod, whenever I use my friends I'm shocked by how instantaneously it loads up songs and how small and light it is. I'm definitely excited to get it in the mail.

I didn't have room on mine either but didn't want to lose all my songs or photos so I purchased a seperate external hard-drive, it wasn't that expensive, and it holds all my music, pics and has room to spare. I just had to plug it in to my PC...when's your birthday? I'll get you one.

Layla- Oh by the way, yes I am getting the video one. It is indeed coming up, maybe I'll ask for one for precaution.

Jeff - Oh that sucks! I know how I felt when my last cd player died, then I fixed it, and it died again. I have hundreds of CD's with music on them. I backup my backups. I have somewhere in the 10 to 13 gig range of music; and still growing.

I've been holding off on going to an mp3 player, I like my CD player, it's easier for me than playing around with menus to find what I want.

You'll be happy with your ipod, my buddy has one, and he has tons of stuff, plus you can upload your stuff from your computer using apple's proggie.

Happy playing. ;)

Peace,

- Neo

Neo - I was extremely reluctant to get an MP3 player at first because I was so used to my CD's. Once I got one though I was immediately changed and right now my only use for CD's are for my car for the most part. I am planning on getting a new stereo system in my room so I guess they will get more use but right now my computer is my main source for music in my room.

Jeff - Same here, on both my desktop and laptop. At some point I have to get my collection all in one place, but cataloging it will be a bitch. I think eventually I'll just bite the bullet and get an mp3 player. But they are so small I'm afraid I'd lose it.

Peace,

- Neo

Jeff, I feel your pain. My Dell DJ 30 is ready to die and I am currently looking for a replacement. It has served me well for almost 3 years but the battery is dying a fast death and I can just about get 5 hours of continuous play before it gets too low to use.

I don't download, I still physically purchase CDs so my DJ is full of CDs from my collection. I routinely put newer releases in so I can listen to them on the go. I was looking at a Zune but I don't need all the gadgetry involved. I may have to resort to an iPod as well but I hate being one of Apple's sheep.

I feel your pain, I really do.

I had a related tragedy last week. When flying down to my southern adventure (the subject of my most recent post), I left my new iPod on the plane.

AARRGGHH!!!

And depsite calls to the airline and airport, I could not find it again. So I had to suck it up and buy a new one. Drat.

jeff,

Man, I feel your pain. My RCA Lyra Jukebox 2762A ("Reddie") is also dying due to a waning battery.

I've only had mine two years (I got it refurbished off eBay), and yet we had some good times.

I even dropped the thing, got the dreaded "file system corrupted," and actually opened it up to plug the hard drive back into the circuit board.

I'm now using a small 512 player in lieu of getting something else, but I sure liked the 4GB Reddie had, which held every CD I had ever made, including several that I actually bought.

Man, it's strange to be so attached to a piece of technology...
