5) Genesis
Yes, the lower half of the top Prog Rock band of all time has finally begun... It is impossible to deny the greatness of Genesis in the genre. The band has one of the most star studded line ups any band in the past has ever seen with major names like Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks. The bands theatrical and complex sound is truly unique and they truly encompass the symphonic prog sound. The band hit the prog scene with authority when their album "Nursery Crime" was released in 1971 containing their beloved track "The Musical Box." Genesis continued to release album after album of pure prog without looking back. Genesis was also a step above of the majority of prog bands because they had a pure sound which never sounded like an imitation. They were a band that offered so much more than every other band around, they were intelligent than most with an ingenious sound and witty lyrics. The band would eventually wither down once Gabriel left after the release of the ambitious album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway." The band retained their prog sound despite the loss of the enigmatic Gabriel. Following the album "Wind & Wuthering"(The final classic Genesis album) Steve Hackett decided to part his separate ways leaving the band in the grasps of Phil Collins who decided to steer the band into a more radio friendly direction. The intriguing complexity that was Genesis was lost but the band did have a long prog run with a number of essential albums.Essential Albums: "Foxtrot" and "Selling England by the Pound"

It's interesting that the Phil Collins-led Genesis turned into such a dull commercial project, yet Peter Gabriel also found a great deal of success on his own, all the while breaking new musical ground.
You really need to write for a magazine, you have such great insight. Wait a minute - to people even read magazines these days???
Bob - It was definitely a shame what happened to Genesis after the departure of Steve Hackett.
Layla - Thanks so much, I still read magazines, but I don't really read music magazines.
Jeff - I still like the cover that Disturbed did of land of confusion better than the orignal. ;)
Peace,
- Neo
I'd have to put Genesis, especially the Gabriel years, on top, for obvious reasons. They have multiple masterpieces: Supper's Ready, the entire "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", "The Knife", every album is a classic of the genre.
Did Phil Collins continue to play drums after he was pulled in to sing or did they get someone else to drum?
Collins performed both vocals and drums in the studio. On tour they brought in a number of different drummers to perform with them. One notable drummer they brought in was Bill Bruford of King Crimson.
