Are There any Conservatives in the Theater Tonight? Put Them Up Against the Wall!
That's what many right wingers must have felt last night by their reaction to some of Waters' songs. Waters received a plethora of boo's after performing his solo song "Leaving Beirut" which contains lyrics attacking the war in Iraq and right wing politics for instance: " Don't let the might, the Christian right, fuck it all up / For you and the rest of the world" and " Oh George! Oh George! / That Texas education must have fucked you up when you were very small." Waters did not make any outright offensive statements throughout the show but the crowd was still very bothered by the song. I was rather upset by this because it is not like Waters went out of his way to preach his views by speech, what he was doing was playing his songs and if you don't like his songs then don't go. Luckily for Roger there were no hard feelings between him and the crowd and the fans continued to support him and Waters looked like he was having a blast. Now with that out of the way I will go on to review the rest of the show. Before Waters took the stage there was a giant screen which projected a video of a radio which was constantly being switched to find some good stations. After about fifteen minutes of getting the crowd itching with suspense he came out and performed "In the Flesh" flawlessly, even utilizing the spotlight to point out individuals in the crowd when asking the questions of if certain ethnicities and such are present. It was probably the best song of the whole show. He followed it up with a great rendition of "Mother" and then "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" which featured images of Syd in the background and even a bubble machine placed above the stage. He went on to perform three songs from the classic "Wish You Were Here" which were a shortened version of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-V", "Have a Cigar" and "Wish You Were Here." He also did two songs from "The Final Cut" and then two solo songs which led to the booing which I noted earlier. He ended the first set on "Sheep" and the famous flying pig came out to do a round of the theater. The picture that you see on the top right is one I took with my phone when the pig flew over my head. The pig eventually made its way to the outdoor area of the theater and I'm not quite sure what happened but the pig flew away into the sky. I'm not quite sure where it ended it up but if you happen to live anywhere in Jersey or around Jersey take a look into the sky to see if you can see a giant flying pig.
After a fifteen minute intermission Waters came out to perform the much anticipated "Dark Side of the Moon" set. With the giant moon in the background he came back out and played the beginning of Dark Side. When the vocals began on "Breathe" my stomach dropped, all my fears had come true. This just wasn't meant to be played without Gilmour! The band sounded great but the vocals just weren't even close. Guitarist Dave Kilminster performed the vocals in replace of Gilmour and his voice wasn't terrible but no where near as great as Gilmour's. It sounded more or less like a sub par cover band. When "On the Run" came on my expectations were lifted a bit due to the quadrophonic sound, the pulsating and fury just circled around the listeners for one of the best listening experiences in the world. One recommendation I have is that if you have a SACD player go and purchase the SACD version of "Dark Side of the Moon" immediately! The vocals on "The Great Gig in the Sky" sounded phenomenal, not quite as good as Clare Torry's but then again who's voice is that great? During the whole set I felt a bit robbed but it didn't come as much of a surprise, it was indeed what I was expecting. My final wish was that "Eclipse" would sound great but unfortunately the band failed to do that. When performing "Eclipse" the amps should have been turned to eleven (Curtsy of "Spinal Tap") but instead what it sounded like was a quiet rendition of the song with no emotion.
The encore consisted of songs from "The Wall" which certainly made me happy because I went to see Roger perform his songs and not to see some random guitarist trying to copy Gilmour's vocals. "Another Brick In the Wall, Part II" was great because the crowd was really into it and Waters was as well slashing his arms around to emphasize the song. "Comfortably Numb" was the closer and my only grudge against this was the solo didn't sound like the recording, maybe it's just me but nobody is able to re-create that Gilmour sound.
In the end my review may sound like a lot of bickering but the first set was phenomenal. My only advice to Waters is if you are going to tour a full Floyd album, make it "The Wall" or "Animals", one where you actually sing. The stage performance was fantastic, just may be one of the best stage shows I've ever seen with thundering pyro-technics and flying pigs. If this were a battle between Gilmour's tour and Waters' I would have to give the edge to Gilmour because only he can re-create that classic Floyd sound. I guess that was why Floyd was so great, you had one of the best song writers in the history of Rock and one of the best guitarists to put them in action.

Great review -- I feel like I was there! I'm gald it was better than I had feared it might be, despite those downers you mention.
Anyone trying to match Gilmour's vocals will have trouble. Those songs were made for him.

JEFF! It sounds like all in all it was a great concert! I am so glad you enjoyed it. This was a really good review, I ditto what David said.
About the pig - it flies fast, I just saw it out my window heading for the Pacific.
David - Thanks, Gilmour was one of a kind and as you said those songs were meant for him.
Layla - I had a great time and it was a great show. Well if the pig is going that fast there may be sightings over China!
I was there last night also.
I disagree with your criticism of waters performing without gilmour on one fact- every time I've see Floyd sans Waters- his voice is horribly absent, with either gilmour covering waters' vocal parts or one of the 20 musicians on stage copying his vocals terribly.
Ive seen Floyd without Waters about 5 times, and every single time I have, I miss Waters' voice. I missed Gilmour Wright and Mason for about half a minute during this performance.
Waters may have put together a cover band, but the performances are stunning. The guitar solos hit every note on the recordings as do all the instruments (something I never experienced at a floyd show). Waters setlist choices are from albums people really want to hear (floyd is pushing new crap every show). If only they would re-form and do a multi year tour, I would go as many times as I can.
Bottom line- if Roger Waters plays near you, go. This was one of the best shows Ive seen all summer (Zappa's band, Steve Miller, Steely Dan- and all those shows rocked hard).
I agree that Glimour was missed, but the show was still awesome.
I actually enjoyed the story he told in the song "Leaving Beirut" even though most of the crowd boo'd. I was in section 304.
I have a recording with Dave Kilminster... It was a one-off gig with John Wetton of King Crimson and Asia, Carl Palmer of ELP and Asia, Dave Kilminster, and John Young. Young has been Wetton's keyboardist on his live gigs for years... And Kilminster was supposed to have been the guitarist for a failed 3/4ths Asia reunion back in 2000 or 2001 (incidentally Asia reformed in its entirety earlier this year). At any rate the one-off group was called "Qango" and they did ELP, Asia, Wetton solo material, and even a cover of All Along the Watchtower. The ELP covers sounded pretty good, but it's not surprising considering how similar Wetton sounds to Greg Lake.
Kilminster did a respectable job on guitar, but he only sang back-up so the recording I have didn't expose me to his vocals that well.
Anonymous - I don't feel that Waters has a bad voice nor do I feel that anyone can re-create it but the point I was trying to make was that Waters should have played an album in which he sings. If he was to have played "The Wall" or "Animals" or even "The Final Cut" I doubt I would have any criticisms of the show. Also, I happen to really like the newer Floyd which you call "crap." I think the "The Division Bell" is one of their best works so I have no problem with hearing songs from latter part of their career. Lastly, when I saw Gilmour his solo's were phenomenal, definitely the best guitar work I've ever seen live. His solo on "Comfortably Numb" went above and beyond the recording, also his solo on "Fat Old Sun" was to die for.
Mike - I thought "Leaving Beirut" was fantastic. Waters had some balls to project the whole story and lyrics on the monitor and I applaud him for that. I know the people I was sitting next to weren't to happy, they even got up and left their seats for awhile.
Perplexio - Kilminster is certainly a great guitarist I wouldn't take that away from him and his vocals aren't bad either. To me it's just hard to listen to "Dark Side of the Moon" without Gilmour.
Jeff - Wow, sounded like a great show. I didn't know Roger was still tourning.
Btw, I think I saw that Flying Pig heading towards Washington. ;)
Peace,
- Neo
The pig appeared out of nowhere.......then disappeared behind me in the lawn seats. Never saw it again. If me and my family weren't so sick just before the show, I would have seen your post that you were going and hooked up with you at PNC.
BTW, it was a full moon the night of the concert.
Neo - Layla saw the pig over California so I guess maybe he took a turn North.
Mike - I didn't really know what happened with the pig until my Dad went to bathroom for intermission and told me the pig flew away.
Jeff - LOL!!!!!
With that Walters lyric I have a question. How does the Christian right think they are moral people? They believe in a dumb war. They say they support the troops, but what is supporting the troops making them fight an unwinnable war or bringing them back home safely. Since Bush has taken over poverty has increased... Jesus Christ talked more about poverty than about gays kissing. Walters is correct the Christian right is filled with a bunch of hypocrites and morons.
Neo - I'm starting to think you meant Washington DC not Washington state, lol.
Anonymous - I agree with you that the Christian church has become very corrupt focusing on issues which are favorable to them and issues which they can actually capatalize on. While I do feel the church has been corrupt the fundamental values aren't moronic. It's a shame corruption has plagued something so virtuous.
I would like to see Waters or Gilmour live, unfortunately niether has plans to come to Australia as far as i know :(.
One of my online friends from a message board I frequent saw Waters live @ MSG last night. He said Nick Mason came out and joined him for the 2nd set when he did the Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety.
Anonymous - That's a shame that they never came. For some reason I though Gilmour did head over to Australia for his last tour but I don't really know why I think that. They were both great, I hope you eventually get a chance to see one of them.
Perplexio - Yeah, Mason played at the MSG show. I sort of regret going to see him at PNC opposed to MSG because I love Mason.
Well Roger is coming...announced about a week back.......gotta get myself a ticket!
