Cover Song Gallore
Cover songs always make for good conversation. Did the cover do the original justice? Did the cover surpass the original? Should that original not have been tainted with? No matter how you look at it cover songs are inevitable and artists will continue to release them. One thing we should never forget is those who created the originals and upon looking online I found a few sites that show who actually performed the original versions of songs and those who covered them. These sites appear to have a pretty substantial collection but one problem I found is: WHO DID THE ORIGINAL "HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN"! It seems to be a mystery amongst everyone and each of these sites seem to give different answers, I'm assuming that the covers are very loosely based on the original because there seems to be no consensus on who created the original. Anyway, if anyone is curious about cover songs you will be very pleased by these websites. Maybe you will even find out that some of your favorite songs weren't even originals. The Covers Project

I can't wait to check out those links!!! But first can I share my story as it relates to this song. It was the 70;s, I was in Jr. High and taking guitar lessons from a girl who was in HS. This was the first song I learned and I played it to death. I can still play it. Love it!!!
And I thought I was the only one!! :p That was the first song that my dad and his buds taught me to play on guitar as well.
Did The Animal's not do the original? I'm too in a hurry to look at the links at the moment...
*There is, a house
down iiiinnn New Orleans . . .*
Actually this was like the second song my guitar instructor taught me. I only got like two lessons, the first song he tought me was "You Really Got Me Now" and then he asked me if I would rather learn Stairway or House of the Rising Sun and I just pounced on the chance to learn one of my favorite songs by The Animals.
Ret- actually The Animals did not do this song first and there were quite a few people who have done it before them. The list is pretty large for bands who have covered the song.
Speaking of covers, have you picked up Def Leppard's new CD, Yeah!? It's all covers of songs which influenced them. Some of the covers are pretty good (like T-Rex's 20th Century Boy for example). What I like about it is that they didn't go for the obvious covers-- I mean for T-Rex they could just as easily have done Bang a Gong (Get It On) but that's already been done-- they went for the more obscure and I do have to give them props for that.
On another note, I'm a fan of the late Eddie Cochran who has had some of his songs covered ad nauseum--
Sumemrtime Blues -- Blue Cheer, Brian Setzer, and The Who (to name a few)
Cut Across Shorty -- Faces
C'mon Everybody -- Sex Pistols
Somethin' Else -- Led Zeppelin
