Tool's new album "10,000 Days" has leaked onto the internet and the downloading frenzy has occured. This comes to no surprise considering this happens to each and every album that came out in this technological era at least by a band that has a following. The question of morals really comes into play when this happens. You've loved a band for so long and their new album which you've been patiently waiting for leaks onto the internet... Do you download it or wait until it releases? The hardest thing is when you are a fan posting on message boards and everyone has already downloaded it but you want to wait for the release, everyone is talking about the album and you are trying to keep strong and hold out until the album actually hits shelves. Personally I can't resist the temptation, when an album leaks I have to hear it, now of course I support the band by buying the album and I always buy them the day they come out but it's so hard to see it sitting there online and not download it. For those who actually do wait I commend them for their extreme self-control but I on the other hand don't quite posess that trait. What is everyone elses thought on leaked albums, do you download it? Do you download it and buy the album when it's released? Or do you just wait until it's released to buy it? Well the reason I do what I do is like I said I have very little self control and I figure that regardless of when I hear it I've waited long enough. At the same time I remember the good old days (remember I'm only 20 haha) of waking up bright and early to get to the store and unwrapping the album and smelling the sweet smell of a new Cd and flipping through the jacket. I do think there is a bit more pleasure in buying it the day of release and holding out on hearing it before but I just can't resist. I do have an enormous Cd collection so don't just assume that I download and not buy because there is nothing quite like owning a Cd. I support the music industry completely and I never disagreed with what Metallica did when taking down Napster, of course I love free music but how could you honestly hate them for sticking up for their rights?

I'll be 34 this August, maybe it's an age thing but I still like to wait for the actual album.
Back in the day, you were lucky if the local shop cracked the cellophane on an LP to give you a sample. Most of my purchases in the '80s were based on reviews I read and band reputation. Nothing beat waiting in line outside the record store the day of release, hoping there would be enough copies, and hanging with the usual crowd. Yes, I said "wait in line" and there was a crowd.
Times have changed. With CDs being so expensive, and the Internet providing more access to different bands/music, each dollar has to be spent wisely. I still go by reviews and band rep but samples become the deciding factor when I'm unsure.
I have never downloaded an album in advance of the release. I always pick up new albums the day of release but now you don't have to wait in line. Problem is that you have to hope that the shop has at least 1 copy in stock.
Yeah, I always used to buy albums from my local record shop but then Best Buy moved in along with many other large electronic stores and my local store had to shut down. It's a shame that it had to come to that. I always feel guilty buying from the major stores. It was good to hear your input.
If bands were smart they'd purposely "leak" a rough cut of the album (pre-edits and etc.) and do their best to make sure the legitimate version doesn't get leaked. That way the fans could hear a raw version of the album for free but would be put in a position where they'd still have to go out and purchase the album if they wanted the finished/edited product with the CD sleeves and etc. Or they could release the finished product with a bonus track or 2 that would not have been on the leaked version.
I'm 31 and if the album is something that I'm anticipating and it leaks, I'll download it when I find it and buy the album when it comes out.
I must admit that there are few bands out there that I follow enough to know that they have a new album coming out... let alone know if it has leaked!
I feel pretty sure that the "leak" of the Tool album was strategically placed. I agree with Perplexio's idea of "leak" something lesser than the whole thing, then put the whole thing on Sale on the release date.
It could be all for not though... because the day its released in the store is the day its released to the file-sharing network.
I think the decoys are funny too. I downloaded just about every song from 10,000 Days only to find goofy noises and people talking about nothing at all for minutes at a time. I expected as much and was really surprised when I got wind of the whole thing coming out.
Jeff, have you played Intensions backward yet? If you are 20, then the message is targeted at you... heheheeh... so evil are they, eh?
I'm very pleased with the album myself and will be buying it Tuesday because I like to look at the pictures. :p
