April 4th 2006: The Countdown Starts Now

On this grand date I will be seeing David Gilmour. I can't even begin to express how thrilled I am. I will be seeing him at Radio City Music Hall and unfortunately since I'm a poor college student I'll be sitting in the second Mezzanine but from what I vaguely remember from Radio City Music Hall is that really there are no bad seats, plus I'm second row which is good because I sure can't afford $350 tickets. Considering there are very few things I need to survive such as: breathing, surfing, Chelsey, the New York Jets, and Pink Floyd I am so excited. David Gilmour is my personal favorite of Floyd, I'm not much of a Waters fan and would rather see Gilmour over Waters any day. I also heard that Nick Mason and Rick Wright might pop up at a few shows. Sadly this is the closest I will ever come to seeing Floyd as a whole, so I will take what whatever I can get. 105 Days Left!

Bob Dylan: The DJ?

Yup, that's right Bob Dylan will no be hosting a weekly show on XM radio, giving his own commentary on things and hosting interviews. He will be hand picking the music on the show. I would really like to hear this, Dylan's a genius to say the least. Dylan said this about hosting the show "Songs and music have always inspired me. A lot of my own songs have been played on the radio, but this is the first time I've ever been on the other side of the mic." Too bad I don't have XM and I'm not planning on getting it but maybe if I ever do find someone who does have it I'll make sure I give it a listen.

Tool's New Album

Well rumor has it that we will see a new Tool album in April. It is really hard to show my excitement for this album because it is just ridiculous. I've been waiting patiently since 2001 which was their last release and now a new album is finally arriving and all I know is that it will certainly be incredible because Tool has never put out an album that was just decent not even just good. Every album is incredible, just when you think it's impossible to top they do it. Maynard James Keenan goes down as one of the top five musical artists in my book, and I'm sure I would be under heavy criticism for that considering nobody really knows him. A short overview of him is everything he touches turns to gold, he's like King Midas. He has two bands which are two of the best bands out right now, he is a genius for short. Going away from Maynard there is Dana Carey who is easily one of the best drummers ever and Justin Chancellor is incredible on bass, everybody loves his work on "Schism." Anyway, I will be counting down the days until Tool shocks us again.

My Day With John Lennon

In my last post I said I had no interesting stories regarding John, but now that has changed. Last night I had one of the most interesting nights of my life. My friend Mark and I had decided to go to Strawberry Fields to show our respects for the great John Lennon. We left at 5:15 PM which mean I would have to leave directly from my Spanish class to catch the train. I had been carrying my books at the time and thought it would be a hassle to carry them so I figured I would put them in a bush and I would grab them on the way back, because honestly, who wants to steal a Spanish book?
We arrived at the train station on time and got our train and arrived in Strawberry Fields at around 7:00 PM. What a site it was, thousands of people were there, there were tons of reporters, and cops everywhere you look. In order to actually get into Strawberry Fields we had to wait on a twenty minute line, but it was all worth it. Once we got in we met some of the most unique people I have ever met. It honesty seemed that nobody was really quite sane; regardless they were all extremely nice. It was such a great moment, people with their guitars, drum sets, tambourines, bells, basically anything that makes noise was being used, even a kazoo… It was just a non stop party, singing Beatles songs and Lennon songs all night long. We had expected to leave at around 9:00 PM which didn’t exactly work out the way we had planned. It was just so touching how everyone came together for this legend that touched the world with his music and words. At 10:55 PM there was the first moment of silence to remember the time he was shot and one at 11:15 to commemorate the time he was declared dead. It was just such an incredible experience, complete silence in a crowd of thousands all holding up the peace sign. After that the music and fun continued and the “Imagine” mosaic was filled with flowers, drawings and candles. We stood there singing and dancing in the cold for a total of over six hours.
Eventually a reporter came up to my friend and I and asked us a few questions, I told him how John had affected my life and affected my politics. Now what is unfortunate was I was unable to hear the broadcast. We had called our friend to ask what the latest train time was coming back home and to our dismay we had already missed the final train. We tried desperately to find a way back but there was no such luck. We had to sleep over in New York Penn Station for six hours. We got there and decided to walk around the city which we did for an hour and actually managed to walk over forty blocks, we got stuff to eat and met a fair share of characters and of course it wouldn’t be New York City if someone didn’t offer you drugs. Once we got back to Penn Station my friend had slept but instead I bough a newspaper because I couldn’t fall asleep. Time went by rather quick and we caught a train at 6:30 AM. We arrived back to our town at 7:00 AM and were accompanied by what looked like a blizzard. Of course we had to walk a mile through it to make matters worse and I also had to walk out of my way to get my Spanish book which I had buried in a bush. Of course it was covered under around three inches of snow and was soaking wet. I got back to my room and all I could say is, if someone asked me if I could do it all over again for John I would reply…HELL YES! Anything for you John! The pictures you see are what I took with my cell phone camera so obviously don’t expect the greatest quality, one is of the “Imagine” mosaic and the other of the moment of silence.

Thank You John!

Well to commemorate the 25th anniversary of John Lennon’s death I figured I had to write something. I wanted it to be big and extremely important but if I was to just right about Lennon it would be something one can ready anywhere else. I don’t have any amazing experiences with Lennon nor do I have any ironic stories but he did affect my life in such a great way. When I was a freshman in High School my musical taste had changed, I became a full fledged lover of classic rock. It somewhat became my life and has devoured it ever since. I was a big fan of Pink Floyd and The Doors and decided to branch out into liking other bands. I decided to try out The Beatles, the first song I listened to was “A Day In the Life.” I heard it and was nearly brought to tears. Now I had obviously heard many Beatles songs in the past being brought up in a household that loves classic rock but I never really listened to it. John’s voice was just so calming and soothing, just so emotional and beautiful. I had never heard such a breath taking song in my life; I just craved more and more. My love for The Beatles grew larger each day and especially for John. For some reason I immediately grasped John as my favorite of the Fab Four. Maybe it was his personality and maybe it was his voice, it’s not something I could really pin point. I eventually grabbed a hold of his solo work and heard “Imagine.” Once again I was struck in the same manner as “A Day in the Life.” John has such a great way with words, and can paint such a great image into the listeners mind. Nearly all my political views could be summed up in “Imagine.” I am a socialist at heart wanting everyone to be equal, and all I want is peace. Thanks to John Lennon I have developed a love for politics, a love for music, and such a great desire for the world to be peaceful. It kills me every day knowing that the world had lost such a brilliant man who could have changed the way human kind thought and acted. I honestly feel that if the world could achieve peace, John Lennon would be the man to bring it. John Lennon also reminds me of my dad who loves Lennon’s thoughts and music. Unfortunately I won’t be able to see my dad for quite awhile because he is away but whenever I listen to John I will think of him and think of how depressed my dad gets when he thinks that the world had lost one of the greatest humans to ever walk the earth. I wish I could thank Lennon for changing my life and affecting me so much but I can’t due to Mark David Chapman. I always made fun of those people on TV telling famous people how they changed their life, but now I realize that they really can…John Lennon is the only person that was bigger than the music he made. Rest In Peace John, and may your words and soul live on forever!

Rockin' Against Whoever...As Long as I Get Paid!

I love the moment when I first saw the CD “Rock Against Bush.” I was extremely curious to see who was on it, when I looked on the back I saw all Emo bands which are normally crying about their girl problems. The only reasonable person I saw that was on the CD was Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys. Regardless of all of this, I think it is just a joke that there is an album called “Rock Against Bush.” What a terrible ploy to make money. It really seems as if hating George Bush is a fashion, I see shirts and even CD’s. Clearly these CD’s are not about getting a message out, instead they are just about making money. Now I dislike Bush as much as the next liberal but I don’t want to see CD’s of it, especially if you are paying $14 for it. If you want to get the message out do it in a way that it is accessible for all. Take a look at Rage Against the Machine, they did a free show in front of the Democratic National Convention they also did a free show in front of Wall Street and that is only the beginning. John Lennon was always out making his voice heard in a way that all can hear. U2’s Bono is over in Africa helping people with AIDS like it’s his job. I am very disappointed in Jello Biafra for falling into this pitiful trap; I hope he’s not that desperate for money. If you have a platform to have your voice heard, don’t abuse it for your own greed.

What If?

Always a question we ask ourselves, could we have avoided a tragedy if we had just done one minor thing differently that day? Would you have gotten into that car accident if you had driven just a few miles per hour slower? Well it appears that John Lennon had a situation where we could ask "What if?" Recently there were a few things that have been released about the moments before Lennon's death. That moments before Lennon arrived at the Dakota to meet his fate he was actually planning on stopping at a nearby Deli to grab something to eat because he was extremley hungry, he stated that "If I ate it would go straight to my knee." Now what if Lennon went to that Deli, would that have made Chapman sick of waiting? Another huge moment which could have changed the course of events is the fact that Lennon left the car before he actually arrived at the Dakota. There was a car blocking the driveway of the Dakota so Lennon decided to get out of the car instead of waiting and going into the private Dakota courtyard where Chapman couldn't get in. It really makes you wonder "What if?"

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.
-John Lennon
